(Anonymous) 2014-12-21 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)Let's not forget that this is a relatively short book and film, so unless you're getting it legit confused with the Jim Carrey version, you're really reading too far into nothing in order to misinterpret it. The Grinch's only motivation is that he hates Christmas, and he wants Christmas to stop. That he himself is not materialistic doesn't matter, even if he is the protagonist. He assumes the Whos are, and tries to hurt them through this misinformation. Nearly the entire thing is the Grinch meticulously stealing presents and imagining what a terrible Christmas the Whos will have when they realize all of their gifts and decorations are gone. And then- the Whos are not upset in the slightest, and he realizes he had misinterpreted the meaning of Christmas. And he stops hating Christmas. That's the entire story.
