Personally I have an issue with audiobooks and being unable to concentrate on most of them OR getting stressed out by them because I'm more visual than audio when it comes to processing information-- and it sounds like you probably have the easiest time with audio-visual, since you mentioned above having some problems with audiobooks not having a visual component(and definitely some are easier to follow and enjoy than others!), not to mention the stressful associations w/reading from school and tests. I can see how comics and graphic novels would be different, not having the same associations.

Anyway, I just wanted to offer some support because it can be difficult to get past things like that and if the stress response makes reading unpleasant, that doesn't make you a worse fan, nor does it make you less intelligent than people who love reading. I would hope that your fandom friends would be understanding of that, but I know not everyone is. There are plenty of good adaptations of different books that you'll be able to enjoy and I sincerely hope no one ever tries to make you feel inferior for getting into the adaptation rather than the source material, even inadvertently, because as long as you're connecting to and enjoying any version of something, that makes you a fan, and that's what's important.
