all these years and this is still the first thing that comes to my mind when i think bbm. it was a quote from a friend's review of the film. accurate and applicable to so many art house stuff and life.

i should probably give it another go sometime. i've been so into gyllenhaal's work choices lately.

I assume your friend meant 'gay relationship = nothing remarkable', because Gyllenhaal's character was murdered, and that's not nothing happening. I personally found the shirts and the mother's brown paper bag very moving. Sometimes less really is more.

um, wasn't it just given as an assumption that he might've been murdered with it still not being clear if it was either that or just really an accident? or something like that?

I might be mixing up the movie and the short story, but I thought he was pretty explicitly murdered.

they showed him being murdered

No, Jack's wife was telling Ennis the 'accident story' over the phone and in flashback, it was shown he was murdered. Pretty awful to get to know a character like that and then find out he was violently killed for being gay.

oh okay, I thought that was just Ennis imagining things that could've possibly happened to Jack too like that dude who was dragged around by his dick. *shudders* I'm never going to watch that movie again..
