Frankly, I think OP is stretching with the "pretentious" bit of this secret. Most writers who insist that warning for the death will ruin the story are right, because those writers lack the ability to evoke honest emotional impact without relying on a gimmick. It's a good way to sort the good stuff from the dross -- classics are read and reread, even though most people are "spoiled" for major plot points going in. The Dan Brown gimmicky crap winds up in the bargain bin where it belongs.

People do still read the classics even though they've been spoiled, but the people who first read them hadn't been spoiled...and they weren't given warnings, either.

I wish we could ask the writers of the classics what they would've thought about warning for character death. We can never know for sure, but something tells me they wouldn't be for it. A lot of the tension in a narrative comes from the reader not knowing what's going to happen next. The best stories can be reread even after you know all of the twists and turns, because twists and turns alone aren't enough to make and keep a story compelling, but they're definitely an important part of the first-time experience. It's not relying on a gimmick to want readers to be able to have that experience.

Fuck you for the Dan Brown comment. I love those books and those kind of twists.

Oh, grow up. You can like whatever you want, but that doesn't make it good quality. I like McDonald's french fries, but I don't pretend it's anything but junk food.
