I'm all for fic writers not wanting to spoil their stories up front if they prefer not to, but there are plenty of writers who are find with warning for character death. I have two stories with at least one character death in them, and, since in both cases the death occurs in the first few paragraphs of the story, I really can't even summarize them without saying both that there is a character death and who dies.

Warning for a death that takes place in the first few paragraphs isn't a spoiler, though. It's being expected to warn for the culmination of the plot that's controversial.
