Uh, guess my comment wasn't clear. I mean they say that in real life many guys don't do much prep and use spit, while most slash writers always include loads of both and some think 3 fingers + a bottle of lube is the only way to do anal.

That's because the fic writers are writing a trope. And for some readers the prep is as big a deal as the main event.

Yes, this. I've seen people engage in a huge wankfest (on fanficrants I think) about how much prep is really necessary and were 100% basing their argument on all the damn fanfic they'd read. Because if it's in fic, it MUST be accurate...

I mean, I really enjoy reading about loving descriptions of careful prep and all the fingers and messy lube (it's mostly the fingering, I'll admit) in my fic - but... that's not what I enjoy in real life when it comes to actually having anal sex. IRL it's like, prep? What prep? Stick the damn thing in already...

It's funny because I remember when slash fic was criticized for not having ENOUGH prep and writers were sporked for just having two characters going at it as soon as they jumped into bed. Oh how the times have changed -- we've swung completely the other way.

This is going to sound weird, but I would rather people were going away from fic thinking more preperation was required rather than too little. I hate the idea of people trying it for the first time with just spit and a shove. Or even worse, blood. D:

I once read a fic with a brutal first-time anal scene where there was blood everywhere, all running down the receiver's legs and shit. It was awful. Then again, it was meant to be.
