i don't understand why a warning at the end is so troublesome. like, i realize READING COMPREHENSION and MY ART but a warning at the end doesn't spoil anyone except the people who want to be spoiled. what's the problem?

Yeah, I think you're really overestimating how original your fanfiction is. There's war stories where main characters die and war stories where they don't, and all other differences are minor. Tag your shit.

just for the record, i'm the original anon who commented to you and this is only my third comment. i don't pretend to understand why it's ~not your thing~ to warn for something like character death, but i also don't agree with the secret maker's claims of pretension. i mean, i guess i kind of think it's a jerkish thing to do, but eh.

just wondering, do you not warn across the board? like, are rape and/or torture also things you don't warn for?

I'm pretty minimal with my warnings. Sometimes I'll put a very general warning like "bad things happen in here", but I rarely warn for the exact nature of things, unless there's a specific reason to be doing so. Like, if the place I'm posting it is already operating under a stricter set of rules (like a specific genre, or gift fic, or something like that). The rare times I write or draw things that would count as mature content on whatever site I'm on, I mark it as such, because I would like to not be kicked off of sites for breaking rules. Or I just don't post my stuff to certain sites, if I know the audience won't be receptive to it.
I've been doing it that way for at least 12 years now and nobody's ever expressed a problem with it. If someone comes to me with a specific complaint, yes, I'll consider what they're saying.

I think I got in the habit from reading and writing published (original) stories. You don't get warnings for those unless you really go looking for them. I guess I just kinda treat fanfic the same way.

As long as you're following the warning rules for wherever you're posting, more power to you. I only get mad about warnings if I'm reading on, say, AO3, and something is marked "no warnings apply" and then there's a graphic rape scene or something like that. As long as you're not advertising your story as something it's not in order to trick people into reading it, I don't care.

Oh, yeah, I'm definitely for following site rules, and I do try to get the appropriate rating onto all my stories, however the particular site defines various ratings. Ratings are a must.

My thought process I think stems from the fact that I hail from a time before the Internet was widely available to the general public. The books I read had all kinds of horrible things in them, but published works never had warning tags. Even in the days of fanzines, there was no such thing as "warning" for content (except during that brief, awkward transition where slash was warned for, and I'm so glad fandom has grown out of that one).

When I write, I want the readers to read my stories like I read books. Going in, enjoy the tale that I've woven while not knowing precisely where we're going. Putting the map away and just going for a joyride.

Are there things that trigger me? Yes. (And I mean, full flashback/have to call my therapist type deal.) But I take that as known risk when I enjoy media.

If I'm posting to an archive that absolutely requires warnings, I'll give them. But the places I like posting best are ones that have a "Choose Not to Warn" option. That way, readers know that there may be disturbing content, and it's their choice if they want to take a stab at my fic or not.

That's my thought process, anyway. :)

(And to answer the question at the end: I don't warn for rape or torture, either.)

This. I'll give a rating and a summary and a genre label if the site requires it because that's usually enough to give a good idea of what the story is going to be about. Anyone who chooses to read R-rated fic under the 'drama' genre with a summary that talks about overcoming struggles should be able to figure out that this fic is not going to be sunshine and fluffy bunnies and that they should probably look elsewhere if they want cute fluff or whatever.

And it's why I prefer the TV warning thing of "This show may contain graphic material. Viewer discretion is advised."

That's all the fucking warning people need, not this coddling bullshit.

IA - it should be up to the author and the author alone to decide what kind of warnings they put where. Entitled readers are growing in numbers and it's unnerving.

If a reader doesn't understand that while not all war stories involve death but that there's a very high potential for it, then no amount of spoilers can fix their dumb.

...i am pretty sure we're not trying to fix dumb here, we're just warning for character death, anon.
