Re: Some Writers Are Just Rude Though...

Ordinarily I'd agree, but if I was on the receiving end of an international Trekkie dogpile, I might actually loose my cool a bit. Snapping at one fan who says one negative thing is not excusable. Snapping at fan #7,895 who says the exact same negative thing that fans #1-7894 said is, if not excusable, at least understandable.

No, I'm sorry, but it's really not. The thread was for an article that criticized the film and people were weighing in on it. And a lot of people agreed with the original author. And then Bob Orci comes in and patronizingly says "this is why I write movies for a living and you don't" and then a fan (politely) says that he had issues with the new films and Orci tells them to fuck off.

That is COMPLETELY unprofessional.

A critic also complained about Orci and the whitewashing of Khan (though he did call Orci an idiot) and Orci responded by saying that they should fuck that critic's mother.

I have had people say HORRIBLE things to me over my opinions on Star Wars and never once have I told someone to **** off.

And Orci hasn't faced 1/1,000,000th of the criticism that George Lucas faced. And Lucas never told the fans to fuck off either (although I think he had a hell of a lot more reason).

So I will maintain that Orci is a bitch. He showed no respect to people just because they politely stated why they didn't like his movie.

Okey dokey then. (Because I'm also understanding about why you'd go off on a fellow anon on a topic that's emotionally weighty for you.)

I'm not gonna tell you to fuck off for disagreeing with me.

Just that I refuse to respect someone who shows me (and other fans who simply have issues with the book/TV show/movie) complete disrespect.

All I'm saying is that respect is a two-way street and while fans have no right to demand anything from writers, the fact that someone is a writer doesn't give them license to treat other people like crap either.

Yes, because "fans" are ALWAYS respectful when giving criticism.

They were in this case so there's no excuse for Orci's behavior.

I expect professionals to maintain a degree of decorum. And even when people have insulted me FAR worse than any criticism Orci was facing, I have never replied as childishly as he did.

He honestly told a fan to fuck off for saying that Star Trek Into Darkness wasn't as good as the Indiana Jones films.

If he can't handle that level of mild criticism, he has no business being a writer. And I will not extend him any of my respect when he behaves that way.

btw, why people criticize Lucas? Any SW movie in particular?

It's mostly the prequels and changes to the original trilogy (special editions). Which people have a right to air their grievances, but I've seen people say some really, really awful things about Lucas -- saying that he's a pervert (preying on an underage Natalie Portman), making fun of the fact that he had no biological children, etc.

They attacked him so badly that his daughter Katie had to shut down her twitter because people wouldn't stop saying awful things about her father.

And Steven Spielberg even said that he was the one who came up with the "nuking the fridge" scene in Indiana Jones 4. But when Lucas talked to a New York Times reporter and was informed of this, he said that it was him -- that Spielberg was just trying to take the blame and protect him.

Through all of this, I think the worst thing that Lucas has said to the fan base is "These are my movies. Grow up." Which I think isn't nearly as bad as saying "Fuck off!" or "Shall we fuck your mother together?" the way Orci did.

Huh, I thought Lucas was universaly liked.
He's a classy guy, it seems. Good for him and SW fans!

Oh I WISH he was universally liked! In reality, most of the fandom seems to dislike him and credit others for the success of Star Wars. They'll say that since Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi weren't directed by him, that's OBVIOUSLY why they didn't turn out as bad as the prequels. And for A New Hope (which he did direct) -- they'll credit Gary Kurtz (a producer) for it being good since he apparently "stood up to Lucas" and told him when his ideas were bad.

The notion that the flaws in the prequels are due to Lucas surrounding himself with Yes men is a prevalent one.

The "George Lucas raped my childhood" meme is unfortunately true.

Never mind that the worst thing Lucas has ever done in his life (as far as anyone knows) is tell fans to grow up, make changes to the original trilogy and not release the unedited versions, and made the prequels disappointing for some people.

At the same time, the fandom will happily cream itself over Harrison Ford, despite the fact that he shook hands in 2003 with a confessed child rapist.

Sorry for the rant, but this REALLY gets under my skin.

I can imagine.
I'm not a SW fan, exept the Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan movie, so idk about all the fandom drama, which is indeed dramatic. Moffat is not the most hated creator, who'd've thought.

please tell me you've seen more than episode 1 because my heart is hurting reading this

What's wrong with liking The Phantom Menace? YOU certainly don't have to like it but other people do (obviously, given that it made over a billion dollars). I've seen all the Star Wars movies many times (including the unedited original trilogy films in the laserdisc transfers) and I prefer Episodes I, II, III (the prequels) over the originals -- though I do love those as well, just not quite as much.

I've seen more than episode 1.

PS: I have.

I never thought poorly of Lucas, even though the prequels weren't exactly my favotites, but I sure think of him as a class act now.

I could have sworn I read somewhere that he adopted due to infertility. He was still married to his first wife when he adopted his eldest. What a stupid thing to make fun of soneone for.

UGH! I hate when fans bring a creator/writer's personal life and beliefs into things (an exception would be when it clearly affects what they are creating, like Orci's being a 9/11 truther and STID).

Bash the sequels to your heart's content. Making fun of Lucas adopting his kids (and as an adopted kid herself, that pisses me the hell off)? Not cool, not cool at all.

All of them. Lucas has a tin ear when it comes to drama and dialogue, which is why the best two films of the franchise (so far) were not written or directed by him. A New Hope would have been in Santa Claus vs. the Martians territory if it were not for a superlative final edit by Marcia Lucas and that perfect score by John Williams to stick that fruitcake of a movie together.
