I wish I'd read it before I saw it.

Everyone else in that book -- apart from the woman who finds her husband in bed with the underage girl -- is so unsympathetic (made batshit crazy by the vast landscape, actually), I've always wondered what Jack and Ennis would have felt like had the film not primed me to care for them. I mean, I don't think they'd have been less sympathetic, but I'll never know.
