Re: I'm confused by people in this thread saying people don't haggle over computers or TVs.

Also, adding to my previous post, you're being ridiculously self-centred. You've somehow got this idea in your head that people only haggle to get their egotistical kicks and to make you suffer or something, when in reality, and I can't believe I have to explain this, you're not the only person in the world with fucking money issues. Sometimes people haggle because they don't have much money and every cent counts. Shocking, I know. And even for those who are just doing it because they want to get something for cheaper, you don't have to agree to it. They might not buy anything, but hey, you're no worse off than you were before they entered the store.

As a final point, I cannot fucking believe you're trying to justify salespeople actively trying to rip customers off, while simultaneously condemning the customers for trying to get a good deal. "It's their job!" doesn't change anything. You're pressuring people in to spending money they don't want to spend, and you're saying they're somehow screwing YOU over if they don't bend over and take it.

You have some mind-bogglingly warped ideals. Again, I hope I never get served by you.

I know my employer is screwing me over, but the fact is, so are you because you are knowingly doing this so you can save a few hundred bucks here or there on luxury items. You don't need that huge flat screen TV. Make due with a smaller, cheaper one and don't try to haggle down that fancy plasma screen just because you want it. Actually live within your damn means instead of screwing over other financially unstable people because you want that thing and so you're going to try to fucking get it without thinking of the consequences or that you may screw someone else over so they can't make ends meet and put them further in debt. Nope, not so long as you get your new shiny.

I'm not saying you ave to bend over and take it. You can say no. Like, seriously, when a cashier brings up the store has a card, they can get fired for not bringing it up. Fancy that: they want to keep their job! Same if a store worker brings up things you get discounts on with that item: they literally have to. They will literally get fired if they don't. That you don't know this tells me you're not bad off at all, because literally everyone who has worked retail in America knows this. No one likes doing this unless they're an asswipe, and I have met no one who likes "pressuring" people to buy extra things. Believe me, we know you probably won't, but we have to anyway.

Different anon here is confused.

You're genuinely saying if I go into a store and buy something like a stove, which I need to live (ie not a luxury good) and haggle for $35 off the price (which I have done), it comes directly out of your paycheck as the employee on the floor that day who sold it to me?

I'm not sure I even believe that.

All discounts usually have to go through managers, in my experience, and they usually have a policy for them. If it affects your bonus--well, that's the nature of working in a service industry that relies on bonuses. Don't take it out on the customer.

It's probably a good thing you're not working retail any more.

Also

if you've never ever tried to haggle on even say an automobile

but if you did

you are a total hypocrite

Dude I'm not American. I didn't know that because I don't live in a country that treats retail workers like complete shit. Even in America though, the setup you're describing sounds very illegal. You HAVE to give discounts or you'll get fired, but if you do they'll dock your pay? Ridiculous. Do you not have wage protection laws? Do employers not need to have a good reason before they fire you?

Also, again, you're assuming the person haggling is doing it for an item they don't need. Even if it is a plasma TV or something, you don't know shit about them or why they want it. Don't just systematically assume the worst. Stop being such a whiny, judgemental arse.
