No I don't "have to remember" this. I know this already perfectly well. I'm not an idiot. But knowing and remembering this intellectually does diddly-squat. I still loathed the characters and additionally didn't buy their romance. Understanding the context and the point the movie was trying to make didn't do jack shit to convince me to give a flying fuck about the characters or story.

Then this is not the movie for you!

Which is fine. Not everybody likes everything. :)

I am a little concerned that you seem so angry, though. I thought I was responding to someone who was interested in having a conversation. My apologies.

NAYRT

The movie makes me angry too. Maybe you need to remember that women have always been openly abused, killed, and raped with no hope of "passing" privilege. So, yeah, seeing gay men deceive, abuse, and manipulate their wives is painful.

Nonnie, I don't want to argue with you, especially since I think we agree with each other.

The person I responded to upthread seemed to be asking why the movie chose to portray gay people in a particular way. I weighed in with my opinion, my comment implying that I in no way condone the way the wives are treated in the film and in fact find it just as tragic as the homophobia the two leads encounter. I took that question as a genuine invitation to talk about the topic. I wasn't hyperbolic, didn't call names, and am open to disagreement. Really confused about why my comment is generating such vitriol.

I imagine many people found this movie painful for many different reasons, and I don't mean to invalidate any of those reasons. I comment attempted to offer an explanation the nonnie I was replying to perhaps had not considered.

I will now go back to hugging people and posting in Star Trek threads.
