(Anonymous) 2014-12-22 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)The problem is that for a couple of hundred years the only gay stories that were out there were tragic ones, so that became the template.
In a world where it's increasingly legal to be gay and have gay relationships, all those old tragic stories seem boring and dated. Maurice is one of the few exceptions, and ahead of its time in the author's insistence on having a happy ending. But if I recall, even he admitted it was unrealistic back then.
I think it's a really good thing that old tragic gay-dies-at-the-end plotlines have become unfashionable. It shows as a society that we have different expectations for the future.
