This person basically summarizes my thoughts on the matter.

I come from an era before widespread ability to reviewspoil a novel in an easily accessible way and I just learned to roll with it if shit like that happened in a novel.

I take the same approach to fanfic.

Also, re your comment about genres?

Honestly some fanfics are SO DIFFERENT they should almost be original novels. Promises Unbroken and the Sacrifices Arc from Harry Potter come to mind as two prominent examples.

Fanfic-original novel is a continuum, not necessarily a binary.
