Has fandom changed so much? I remember quite a lot of criticism back in the day, especially post-Angelus.

From where I still visit the Buffy fandom it seems we've circled around to Angel, Buffy and Tara can do no wrong while the rest of the cast get differing degrees of criticism.

That's not to say I haven't seem my fair share of super!Xander, bamf!Willow and genius!Dawn to balance things out.

Only one universally hated it seems is Kennedy anymore.

I do find it kind of hilarious how it seems like absolutely everyone hates Kennedy.
were_lemur: (Willow/Tara talk nerdy to me)

I don't hate Kennedy.

I mean, I don't love her. I don't have all that strong feelings for her either way. (I am, however, still pissed at Joss.)

But Tara wouldn't have wanted Willow to spend the rest of her life alone. And while I would rather have waited a year or two for Willow to move on, the fact was, that was going to be the last season of the show.

Well, she was so obnoxious. My reasons are petty but you don't just get introduced and immediately take a seat at the big table.

I don't get when people say Buffy or Angel could do no wrong, they are both extremely flawed heros that make mistakes. That's actually part of the reason I love them, they aren't the "hero is always right" trope, they actually get called on their shit sometimes.

Nobody ever said that. Ever. Buffy got a fair amount of hate considering it was her goddamn show. and from the fandom circles I circled, bashing Angel because Buffy had feelings for him before she had feelings for Spike was practically a requirement of admission.

da

It's been a long time since I was involved in that fandom, but was the Buffy hate due to the last 2 seasons?

For sure she was not as likeable then, but from her POV she had only JUST lost her mom. She came back to a world where everyone else had pretty much moved on from her grief. She didn't have that option. (on top of the whole "I was in heaven" thing)

nayrt, but that was my perception, that it was s6 s7. While her reaction was understandable given "heaven", I feel like the pacing of the writing was off. In real life, timing was probably realistic, but in TV-time, it felt like it was dragging on forever. And even if she had reason to be depressed, with her being closed off and dour-faced, plus I think SMG was getting tired of the role and def started phoning it in in s7, it became harder for a lot of ppl to sympathize with her. Now that I remember it, tho, EVERYONE got a lot less likeable in s6.
