Ok. What should they think instead?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-23 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Whatever they want. But they seem almost offended that SFF, which has generally been about Sensawunda, has characters that are larger than life set against a backdrop of conquering impossible odds.

DA

"...SFF, which has generally been about Sensawunda..."

Have you read anything since, like, 1952, dude?

More than you can possibly imagine. I write it too, and get paid for my words on occasion.

I think the operant question surely is whether sff ought to be about Sensawunda.

I think it ought to be about whatever writers feel like writing about. For fuck's sake, there's room in the genre for both the Gloomy Guses and the Pollyannas and everything in between.

I say this as someone who once destroyed the Earth in one of my (published) stories and who writes everything from humor to horror. I hate when people try to stuff my chosen genre into a damn box. It's big enough for everything.

I'll drink to that.
