If we're giving recommendations, James Tiptree's work tends to be extremely pessimistic.

Also I haven't read The Synthetic Man but I kind of want to because it seems really uncharacteristic for Sturgeon to write something lessimistic

AYRT

I wouldn't say it's pessimistic, it is Sturgeon, after all. But it is very, very, very, nihilistic.

I don't think Tiptree was nihilistic, though. I think a nihilist could enjoy Tiptree's work, but it's not really about nihilism.

I'd argue nihilistic or pessimistic themes are at the very least very present in her work, albeit on a much much less cosmic level than OP seems to be talking about

I remember The Dreaming Jewels as incredibly idealistic. It's got sort of a Nietzschean feel, but not in a dark way.

Thought of Tiptree, too -- I'd rec the short stories "And I Awoke and Found Me Here on the Cold Hill's Side" and "The Screwfly Solution".
