Can someone explain to me the posts i saw (i think on Tumblr?) about Cumberbatch being cast as Dr. Strange being 'whitewashed'? He was a kid born to two people from Nebraska in the thirties (which pretty much screams white farmer to me) and all the art i saw, he was white.

So wth?

Those posts are by people who have never read the comic, i.e; idiots.

Ignore them. They have no idea what they are talking about. It's more or less, "He kind of looks Asian...kind of in some of the original drawings. Therefore; WHITEWASHING!"

Huh. How weird.

Yeah if they'd gone with cultural appropriation they'd, well, they'd still be batshit crazy, but would at least have an argument that wasn't completely baseless right from the start.

He is white, but quite a lot of people were reasonably arguing that having an Asian or Middle Eastern Doctor Strange would help a lot with the rampant orientalism in his backstory. Unfortunately, other people then took that to mean that he *was* Asian or Middle Eastern in the comics and therefore the casting was whitewashing. Personally, I think there's a great tradition of European sorcery and alchemy to draw on, so I don't see any reason why the movies have to be racist, since it's not the 60s.

Huh.

So his 'powers' in the comics were kind of Eastern-origin kind of thing?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-23 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. In the comics he is taken in and trained by a Tibetan mystic. His whole style is based of vaguely Asian mysticism.

Well, considering the title was started in the early sixties, 'Eastern' philosophy and mysticism would have been very popular.

Thanks for the help - good to know!
