A young Mark Hamill was in a massive car accident that completely screwed him looks-wise. So yeah.

But both TESB and ROTJ were post-accident, and he still looks pretty darn good there.

I thought he was hotter in episode 5 and that was right after each accident, right? Didn't they throw in that whole wampa (right? The snow minster on hoth) thing to explain his face?

They did, yeah. I think he obviously looks different but it fits given that Luke has been through some shit since the start of the first movie.

What I was going to say. The damage and surgery changed his look a bit, but he still looked just fine.

Right, but think about it. His face was basically reassembled from parts, not all of them the original parts. Sure, it looked okay at first, because that's what they were going for. But the natural process of aging is not acting on a normal substrate here; it's acting on decades-old stitching and scar tissue and rebuilt pieces and so on. Does that make sense?

Yup, it does, I guess - like all the parts react a bit differently to age?

I don't know the veracity of it, but I once heard a rumour that he had problems with the makeup he had to wear onscreen, which is one reason why his onscreen career has been so sparse (while a voice acting career has done him well).
