serious music question

Am I going insane, or is this actually as terrible as I think it is? Am I losing my mind, or is the singer really that bad at singing? Have I lost the ability to comprehend language, or are the lyrics really that shitty and uninspired?

And is it just me, or does every other indie band sound EXACTLY like this one?

Omg that song is hilarious. Everything about it...I'm laughing so hard.

It's not just you. This is an ongoing problem with indie rock, and I say this as someone who hoovers up as much hipster garbage I can find. Just because it's "indie" doesn't mean it can't be cookiecutter trash.

I find that the harder-edged stuff like Silversun Pickups to be much better.

AYRT

I think "cookie cutter" is a bit of an understatement. I discovered this song while listening to an indie rock playlist someone rec'd me, and I swear to god, most of the time I could not tell where one song ended and the other began. The only reason this one stuck out is because of the spectacularly badly written lyrics.

Yeah I tend to avoid "indie rock" in general now. Indie pop is going places, these days, and alt-rock and post-rock continue to surprise.

Any recs on the indie pop front?

MSMR, Flight Facilities, and especially Mystery Skulls (Mystery Skull's album "Forever" is literally the high point of my year) plus there's a ton of 80s New Wave-influenced synthpop acts like Desire and College and Tesla Boy.

I think either I'm missing something or you are, because that song really seems like it's meant to be a parody. I mean there's a line in there that says "this is for the snakes and the people they bite."

It is pretty stereotypical, but at least it isn't half screaming.

Oh god.

I love this song. Objectively, I know it's terrible. I know it's terrible because the first time I heard it I had the exact reaction as you.

But then it started to grow on me... And I forgot how terrible I'd thought it was originally until you just brought it up. Help. I may have been brainwashed.

I'm rather inclined to declare it an obvious parody song. Not at all familiar with the band, but on top of the fact that everything about that song is a perfect parody of that particular genre...they're called the Front Bottoms.

It's really weird to me that you and I are the only people who think that. Maybe we have a strange sense of humor.

Indie rock just hit Poe's law.

Although it doesn't beat Attack Atack! Stick Sticky for sheer unintentional hilarity.

I don't think it's THAT bad, but it's not really good either. It's very much a cookiecutter indie rock offering, and not an especially nice cookie. Maybe one where the dough got left out too long after it was rolled out, and someone sat on the cookie-cutter, and then the shaped cookie got stretched out when they transferred it to the baking sheet, and then it stuck really badly when they baked it...

Song owns.

Yes from a technical point of view the singing is quite bad and the lyrics are unoriginal. In the other hand, it is intensely passionate and heartfelt and the song owns.

In conclusion, song owns, up the punks
