I thought the Sherlock Holmes stories were about a real historical guy...

I also thought that his real name was a secret and "Sherlock" was a nickname or a title or something, because it didn't sound like a real name to me.

But that's true. It's well-known that Conan Doyle merely edited and published the manuscripts given to him by Watson.
