Don't spoonfeed OP please guys. They need to learn how to use Google.

I doubt this was a case of OP not knowing how to use Google. If they really wanted to know (assuming they don't already) it would have been much faster to just Google it than make a secret about it and wait for it to post.

I suspect this secret was made to generate discussion, maybe even specifically wank (though I don't know if this is a really hot-button topic?).

To be fair, even Googling it can be quite confusing. I spent ages thinking Sony must mean a person or foreign agency or something, because why the fuck would North Korea attack an entertainment company? And I say this as someone who is literally majoring in this sort of thing, so I'm not surprised that the average layman might be even more confused, if they're trying to figure out what it is well after everyone else has already heard about it/talked about it/etc.

North Korea didn't, some trolls from anonymous claimed that for lulz. The mainstream media just took the bait and ran with it.

Exactly. It took me ages to figure that out/dig that up, since just Googling it gave me the kneejerk media reaction for pages of results.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-25 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Googling will often get you only opinion pieces, not a straight up full account. So chill out. OP has a good question because it's one of those things that may never be completely known.

According to FS, every question people ask is better answered by FS than Googling, so I'm afraid you're in the minority opinion here.

Nah. This thing potentially cost Sony a fuckload more then that movie could ever hope to make. If it was just the threats and nothing sensitive got leaked, maybe, but upper management emails? Naw. Whoever did it this was a real hack.

What do you need explained?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-25 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
What exactly happened? Why it happened? How it happened? Why people are up in arms?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-25 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Sony fucked up by having 1990s era security on their corporate network, someone broke in, dumped a load of stuff online, then someone fron anonymous pretended to be from North Korea and troll them over a shitty movie they had coming out, Sony cancelled the release of the movie (probably because it was slated to flop anyway and cancelling it then releasing it later as a "contraversial" movie would do better sales) the mainstream media lost its shit at the mention of NK and suddenly even the President of the fucking USA is having to pretend that North Korea gives two shits about Sony's crappy movie, then someone at Langley pointed out that this could give them the Casus belli they've been looking for for the last decade, but now people from the actual internet security industry are pointing out that the claim it was North Korea is total bullshit and that it was really hackers. Meantime Sony got some free PR for a movie that was due to flop, and also has some PR that might help them get a better deal with Marvel over a combined Spider-man/Avengers movie.

Happy? Merry Christmas.

Oh, but you forgot Channing Tatum's email.

I'm really pretty indifferent to most of the shit that happened because of the hack, but I find that email absolutely hilarious.
