I thought swag was material goods? Maybe I have that wrong. But if not, she does have some awesome apparently endless supply of shiny things she can turn lethal but also wear to a formal event.

(Personally when it comes to swag I want Barbie's.)

Swag can be stuff or attitude.

Not in this case. Douchebags co-opted to word to describe themselves, I think it has to do with attitude or how cool you are, I'm not quite sure.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-25 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
It's not co-opted. It's just slang that people (douchebag or not) use.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2014-12-25 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. But it's still mainly associated with douchebags.

I guess I can't really speak to your experience, but I haven't noticed that myself, and I don't see any reason to be bothered about it, I guess.

I've never heard "swag" used that way. I thought it was just a term for badassery or coolness.

I've mostly heard it as slang for "cool stuff", but I've also heard it to mean 'badassery or coolness'.

In a way, swag refers to the kind of "cool stuff" you that some might see as inherent or intrinsic to badassery and coolness. :P

True! Maybe that's how the one use sort of became the other, too.

"Swag" - as in, "swagger" only means things ??

(Anonymous) 2014-12-25 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I've only ever heard it used to refer to free gifts. Like if you go to an event and you get a goodie bag or you get a free gift with purchase at a department store - thgat's swag.

I've never heard it used to refer to coolness or attitude.

There's two entirely different definitions of the word 'swag,' from two different origins.

The more classical one, dating back to the 19th century or so, was the term for the loot a thief took. By extension, it's come to mean things like convention giveaways or free samples -- things you get without paying for them.

The more modern one, much more recent in origin, is a shortening of 'swagger,' in the sense of a bold, confident, even arrogant form of walking. Its meaning is a little nebulous, as most slang is, but generally means something like confidence, style, and control of the situation.

This has been your random word fact of the day.
