I'm...distinctly unfond of stories which are supposed to be a character's descent into evil and/or madness, but the bits set before show the character is already on edge, or of questionable morals.

Specific examples: Kubrick's Shining (that mostly came from the casting...there is no way for Nicholson to seem 100% sane), or Breaking Bad (sure it took him a while to work up to murder, but he sure had no problem being an accessory to one!).

Well, I think the point of both stories is less about a good or 'normal' descending into madness and more about the latent madness or evil emerging. So it makes sense to me.

Yeah, at least in the case of Breaking Bad, I'm pretty sure the character was supposed to be questionable from the beginning.
