Re: Types of Characters/Character Tropes You Hate

The Rebellious Princess when it's written so her rebelliousness is supposed to come off as noble/gutsy/admirable/basically the right thing for her to do and not at all selfish. Like, ugh, shouldn't we know the wellbeing of an entire kingdom just isn't as important as one girl's freedom to not wear fancy dresses and act like a proper lady?

for me, it depends on how realistic the setting of the story is. if said Rebellious Princess is an adolescent getting married off to some dude who's three times her age and she's basically expected to live her life as a baby factory while her husband has a million consorts, then yeah I'd be like "You go girl." if it's more of a fairy tale setting then I generally agree

I love the rebellious princess trope, but I think I'd still hate the kind of thing you're referring to, because it sounds like real bad writing

That was less a failing of Brave and more a failing of how people took it, I think, but it is an annoying trope. Generally, I have problem with imposing modern Americanized values on other time periods or settings (i.e., arranged marriage were totally normal for royalty in that approximate time). Drives me nuts.

I wasn't actually talking about Brave. I haven't seen it, but I thought people might think I was so I made sure to mention that I only hate the trope if the character doesn't get called out for selfishness, and from what I know about that movie, it sounds like she does.
