Re: A little question for Japanophiles

Are you sure it's "tsa"? I know it's a stretch, but you might be thinking of "kuso," which (now that I think of it) can sound a little like "tsa" when it gets spat out. I've never heard of "tsa" and it's not a sound you can even write with the Japanese alphabet.

Anyway, "kuso" is literally "shit," and it's rude (slang) but not considered profane quite the way an English swear word is. You shouldn't say it to someone you need to make a good impression on, but there's no big taboo against saying it within earshot of children or for a child to say it. Kids aren't exactly encouraged to say it, so you'll hear it less on kid shows. But it can really be translated as anything from "darn" to "fuck" depending on context. Most Japanese swear words are the same, so if kuso isn't the one you're thinking of, the rule probably still applies.

Haha yeah, I was wondering what 'tsa' was as well, since it's not anything that exists in Japanese.

DA. I wonder how one could even hear "tsa" from "kuso". Usually it's the u you can't hear, while the o sound is quiet clear, so the OP should hear "k'so", not "tsa". O_o
