Shitty Secret Santas

(Anonymous) 2014-12-26 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
(THIS IS NOT RELATED TO THE ONE HERE. I did not participate in that one.)

Have you ever worked really hard on a secret santa gift, whether it's buying something nice or putting a good amount of time into a fandom work... only to get a rubbish gift or no gift at all? What happened, and what was your opinion on it?

I think anything with fanfic can be sort of a let-down. Sad thing is, it's not always lack of effort, just some people are not-so-great writers.

I'm always sort of wary if it's a fic that JUST reaches the word limit. It's like the were just counting when the could stop.

And for the record - no, not referring to anyone here.

somebody who didn't like me got my name in secret santa once and gave me a bunch of monogrammed stuff--with the wrong initial on it. what a bitch.

Out of all the secret santas I've done, I've never gotten something back that I was happy with. Twice I've gotten traced art, another couple of times I've gotten photographed pencil drawings, and this year I didn't get anything at all. Really considering just giving up on secret santas in general.

It's nice to draw things for others, and it gives you experience working with things you probably wouldn't work with otherwise, but it always sucks when I enter a secret santa with some of the best artists in the fandom and I get a santa who probably rushed their gift in hopes of getting fanart from one of the BNFs.

I've gotten a secret santa gift that I liked maybe once in my life, lol. And even then it was just a cute thoughtful box full of inside jokes and stuff, nothing fancy.

I don't really mind when I get crummy gifts in fandom, because I usually do fic exchanges and I know that that's highly subjective and there have probably been people who hated the fics I wrote for them. I just put on a happy face and leave a nice comment thanking them and move on. It only really bothers me irl, because I typically spend a lot of time and money on the gifts I give.

Yes, of all the secret santas I have participated I only loved one of the gifts I got.
But to be honest I enjoy more the giving part, so I don't mind too much even though it would be nice to get something better.

What does bothers me (in fandom) is when I don't even get a polite "thanks" in the exchange. This just happened to me this year and although it was a pinch-hit and not the main gift, I worked hard on it and this silence is annoying me far more than any shitty gift.

I take more effort/time/personalization on my Secret Santa gifts than 99% of of the people I've ever been paired with. Gifts and fanworks. I always go all-out and have never received anything quite as special.

The only thing that really sucks is being paired with someone who requests ONLY gift cards. As in, "I would like ONLY gift cards to Steam or Amazon. No food, no clothes, no books!!" Okay, it's easy to get, but it's such a bummer not to be able to pick out something that my friend wound enjoy having. I got him the damn Steam card and drew him a Mass Effect holiday card. Which he wound up saying he liked more than Steam stuff, and he kept the card on his fridge until he moved. Heh.
