Pokemon 3DS game

(Anonymous) 2014-12-26 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
What is the best Pokemon game for the DS? I've never played a Pokemon game before and I'm strongly considering it, but I'm not sure which one would be best to try. Anyone have any suggestions?

HeartGold/SoulSilver or Black/White are my favorites in the series and can be played on the 3DS. They're older so you can probably find them cheaper too.

The most recent pair is OmegaRuby/AlphaSaphire, so if you want to be up to date go with that.

TBH, any main series game is a good starting point.

That's a good idea to get an older game for cheaper. I think I'm leaning a little more toward a newer game, but I'll definitely have a look at those ones too. Thanks for the suggestions!

They all try to be accessible to people who are new to the series, so you should be good on that front no matter what you pick. I'm a sucker for all the most adorable aspects of the games so I'm partial to HeartGold/SoulSilver for the way the lead pokemon in your party follows you around and does cute things when you click on it, and I love playing with my pokemon in Pokemon Amie in the newest generation, X/Y and OmegaRuby/AlphaSaphire. I think levelling up is a lot easier in the newest generation too, if that influences you one way or another.

Adorable is a good thing. :) That Pokemon Amie sounds like it would be the sort of fun extra thing I'd like. Easier leveling up actually sounds good to me as I really want to play this for fun/relaxation and not stress myself out too much. Thank you for the recs!

+1 I think the levelling is much easier in omegaruby. So much faster, much less dull grinding.

I'd go for X or Y.

Thank you for the suggestion! I'll definitely look into those as most people replying seem to be recommending them. :)

Omega Ruby

(actually I think XY is the most new-person friendly but they're all practically standalones...)

It's good to know that most of the games are standalone. I figured I'd end up a little lost during some cut scenes between raising Pokemon. I was considering a newer game and knowing XY are new-person friendly is really helpful. I did look them up a bit just now and there was something about a bug that won't let you save games though. Is that an easy fix, or was it something in just the first few that hit the shelves before they corrected it?

It's pretty straight forward and each game assumes you're new to the world. There's cameos, but you don't need to play Gold to follow Ruby*, each series has it's own little story theme and while they come in two-sided pairs (silver-gold, ruby-sapphire, XY) you don't need to play both sides.

Re: XY save issues, there was a patch released for that and it should now be safe to save in the city (i'd still err on the side of caution and just enter a building and save in there but they presumably fixed it, i never suffered it)

*the only exception is Black/white and Black/white 2, which tbh I did not enjoy much so I'm not recommending...

That's good to know! Cameos will be flying over my head, but I'll basically be getting the complete story in one game. If I get the XY one I'll remember that for saving. Thank you.

Anon from down below, but I'd recommend you form a habit of saving in Pokemon Centers. I don't think there's ever been any problems with doing that (no glitches, no getting stuck somewhere), and that way, you can kind of "bookmark" where you're at in the game. You can save pretty much anywhere you'd like, but a lot of Pokemon players have gotten used to saving there that it's kind of tradition, haha.

Saving in front of Gym Leaders and before characters who ask you "Are you ready to ___" is also a good idea, just in case something goes wrong and you want a second chance.

DS era: HeartGold/SoulSilver for the same reasons listed above. Plus there's a lot to do besides the main story. If you can get a new copy with the Pokewalker still packaged with it, that's the way to go.

3DS era: X and Y. Personally, I enjoyed everything more and ORAS, to me, felt more like it was playing to the nostalgia of the old RSE players. It was an alright game but not amazing. XY is a good start for new players, imho.

Between the two sets of games I listed, I'd say go with HGSS. Lots of cool stuff to do, despite the fact it's two generations behind.

Thank you for the recommendations! I'm leaning toward a more new player accessible game, but having other things to do alongside or after the main story sounds good too. :)
