I feel you, bro. Just try not to let them turn your love I to hate. That's what happened to me in Teen Wolf fandom and I kinda hate not being able to fully appreciate my ex-otp anymore. Even tho dropping it helped open my eyes to all the other wonderful ships out there.

The BNFs of one of my OTPs weren't only obnoxious; they were downright bullying non-shippers. Constantly.
As a result, I no longer ship the pairing. I couldn't stop associating it with such awful fans.

So yeah, I can relate.

Right? I watched the show, thought I might be interested in the pairing, went into the tags on AO3...oh. Tried the tumblr tag...oh.

It was very disappointing, but sometimes that happens (especially with anime fandoms, I've noticed.)

This is basically why I left my last fandom. The politics of shipping were more important than the actual ship, or the character dynamics, or even the factual aspects of canon. It was all about insecure points-scoring.

The sad part is that, for now at least, it's turned me off shipping and fandom entirely. All this happened about a year ago and I've yet to find any interest in anything new because this experience still sours the very idea of it.

(Not new to fandom, btw -- been in this for a very long time, but my last fandom must be the worst I've ever been involved with in all that time, and I can't help wonder if it's the same one as OP. In almost two decades of fandom, I've never seen so many diverse people become disillusioned and walk away from fandom and fanwork-creation as I have in my time in this fandom, and they all cite the vicious toxic atmosphere as the reason.)

Neither. Like OP, mine was a relatively smaller fandom than that -hence why I'm reluctant to out myself- which makes how toxic it became and the amount of people bailing on fandom altogether because of it even more noticeable.

I don't get why people expect the fans in one fandom to be different than the fans in another. All fandoms have embarrassing fans, because it's basically all the same people, moving from one fandom to the next.

It's not all the same people. It literally can't be, because different types of media have different bases. And yeah, embarassing fans are in every fandom, but some fandoms are a lot worse than others. It's silly to think they're all the same.

True, but sometimes you get lucky and find a fandom that is well behaved for the most part.

The key is to have some responsible BNF's who set a good example and treat the non-shippers or people who ship something else with respect.

In my current fandom there are two opposing ships and one of them has a really nasty BNF and everyone pretty much hates that ship and the fandom because of her. The other ship has very mellow and non-confrontational BNF's and the ship is generally well received.

Every ship I've ever had, big or small, has that to some degree. That's why I usually just ship stuff from the outside without getting involved in fandom.

Some fans are the delusional type that think every tiny thing is a huge deal or make cringeworthy art/fic. You just gotta learn to filter out the good stuff.
