I just watched GOTG for the first time and had the same reaction.

Fandom has failed me. :(

I know that feeling. Evne if it's not something you actually want, there's just this weird indignation when a fandom thing doesn't exist. Like, someone else has to have seen that potential, right?

Rule 34 has become almost archaic. There are so many ships I see that I can't believe there's no fic for. It seems fandom hasn't focused on filling the gaps as much as it used to. Now it's so much more about the big pairings, and only big sites. You used to be able to find an entire site dedicated to Sephiroth/Daffy Duck fics.

I've come across a few surprises too, thinking "everyone will ship this!" and then apparently no one does - or at least they don't write fic or ever post about it. It doesn't matter if I ship it or not, I wanted my assumptions about fandom behavior confirmed, dammit! :P

When I first saw The Fellowship of the Ring, I thought, "Hey, everyone will be shipping Sam/Frodo. Just get a load of all that crying and those meaningful looks!" I didn't really ship them myself, mind, I just figured people would. Two weeks later I took a look at LOTR fics on FF.net and it was 90% Legolas/Aragorn and I thought "Huh... oh, right. Given the option, fandom goes for the prettier boys who are even prettier and aren't short with big, hairy feet. How silly of me!"

When the LOTR movies came out there was a ton of Sam/Frodo (and Merry/Pippin) fic but it was easiest to find at sites specifically dedicated to LOTR or Hobbit Fic.

There was a LOT of Sam/Frodo. Not as much as Legolas and Aragorn but there were entire sites for them. (Infamously.)
