This seems like an oddly defensive response. OP was only giving the reason for why they chose not to donate. It didn't say other people were compelled to donate or that they shouldn't do so if they wanted.

To me it seems the other way around. Making a point of stating WHY you don't donate seems oddly defensive to me, since you do not need to donate in the first place. It's like you feel guilt about it, and are therefore looking for a justification.

It's a secret though. There might be pressure from their circle to donate, but they don't want to and don't feel like they can say that.

Lots of people get pressure and guilt about donating to charities and non-profits, especially around the holidays. I assumed that was what the secret was about.
