Of course, I'm sure not all vegans are like that, but I'm not that likely to know someone is vegan/vegetarian if they aren't that way, unless I'm close enough to them to have had them eat at my house, or eaten at theirs.

This is the issue with pretty much every "cause." If you tell me you're vegetarian/atheist* because it's somehow relevant to the conversation, then cool, I will accept that and adjust the flow of discussion accordingly. But it is almost never actually relevant, and thus your informing me of it immediately brands you as "Oh god, it's one of them."

*Yes, I know there are people of all diets and beliefs who do this, but I am apparently a magnet for self-righteous vegetarians and atheists.
