I've seen a grand total of three episodes of Korra (season 3) ever from when I was staying at a friend's and I can see the basis for this ship just from those three episodes. Hardly seems like an "asspull" to me, there was enough ground to build on even back then.

They were. But they interacted so little in season four, they basically had no time to develop the relationship.

They interacted enough for plenty of people to see and think there was development. You not being happy with it =/= everyone who is is delusional.

It was highly underdeveloped though. Any situation where Mako was with Korra, Asami should have been there, especially with the visit to Zaheer, considering how much of a source of distress he was to Korra and considering how much Asami supposedly cared about her.

I don't get your argument at all. You're agreeing with me that they were close in season three (which was what I got from those three episodes I saw), so why would they need a ton of interaction in season four to develop the relationship if that closeness was already there before it? The relationship was already developed, it just wasn't (to my understanding) a romantic one yet.
