Re: It's becuase people find lesbians less threatening than male gays.

I agree that it's generally less threatening, but it's also more commonly dismissed as people reading too much into it. Because women are allowed to be more physical and intimate with their friends. There would be fewer arguments about how it can be read platonically if it was too male characters holding hands at the end and thus fewer arguments about how the creators are only saying it's meant to be romantic for social justice points.

True, and that goes hand-in-hand with the "less threatening" aspect of it - the only reason they couldn't show Korra and Asami actually kissing each other is because there needs to be some plausible deniability for homophobic parents and when the shows air in countries that are still FAR more disapproving of this sort of thing. That's exactly part of the reason why lesbians are less threatening, as least from the perspective of the media.

this thread reminds me of those asinine newspaper headlines when lesbian celebrities (or bisexuals in lesbian relationships) are out with their girlfriend on a date, or vacation, or whatever when they're VERY CLEARLY DATING EACH OTHER and they're listed in the headline as "Celebrity and Her Gal Pal Out on the Town"

everyone is a "gal pal"
