My favorite thing about superhero comics in the '80s-'90s were the ridiculous outfits!

Jubilee will always be my hero!

Is that Kitty Pryde on roller skates?

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-12-27 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. That was a costume she designed after, I believe, going to a Dazzler concert (or something along those lines... I'm pretty sure Dazzler was an influence of some sort). Professor Xavier put the kibosh on that, because she hadn't yet earned the right to have her own non-uniform costume at the time, as she'd joined not that long before.

(I also think she was going under the 'Sprite' alias as well... not sure)

{They were also afraid her skates would make too much noise. And yes, that was when she was Sprite.}

... I didn't think Jubilee's was all that bad, probably because I was a child of the 90s. Kitty Pryde was something else, tho.

I agree. Compared to some of the fashion atrocities 90s television inflicted upon us, her outfit is almost tame.

It's not all that impractical either.

I feel the same way about anime. I hate everything about anime... except the ridiculous outfits and hair. They're kinda fun.

:)

Somewhere, Chris Claremont is smiling.

I wont lie, some of the 80's and 90's comic book outfits were wonderfully ridiculous.

I have to admit, I always wanted to dress up like Rogue, and while her outfit may not qualify as funny or ridiculous, I'm not about the full on spandex/latex [complete with BRIGHT ASS colors] outfit she had underneath the wonderful jacket. Her hair was always fabulous too.

Oh dear. Kitty Pryde is at least supposed to look ridiculous. But Betsy Braddock - why? Why the drapey shoulderless sleeves with long ribbons at the ends? Why the ruching on your legs that look like sloppy socks? Just... WHY?

At least she developed some fashion sense after she got body-swapped.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-28 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
It serves an artistic purpose. It gives her a different silhouette from the others.

Then she went to armor and a cloak for a while, for the same reason.

Costumes have been getting a lot less fun lately. It's one thing to not have female characters be naked and to give all characters some body armor but when everyone is wearing black with a bunch of weird lines drawn (sewn?) in then I say booooo!

Spider-Woman, for example. I understand wanting to change her outfit after the controversy over the butt shot, but she kinda looks generic now. And there was nothing wrong with her costume anyway. It was simple and iconic.

I miss Psylocke's pink outfit and good-girl nature before she got ninja'ed!
