I doubt that the "how to draw anime" books are bad, at least the Japanese ones. It gives you more ideas and complimenting them with other books (realism, by sample) miight be pretty helpful. After all, once you know the rules, you can break them (of course after a looooot of practice, and never stop practicing).

Now the ones that OP should avoid like pest are the ones from Chris Hart. God, these are so awful.

Indeed, the one good such book I have ever had is japanese! But it was just called "Drawing manga".
