yes, but if we go with my metaphor, you probably show them how to cook water first. just because it's such a basic thing and boiling water is important.

Am I an instructor or a critic in your metaphor, though? You keep mentioning writing classes -- well I don't know what the teachers focus on in those classes, but as a reader I'm not going to, in your words, show anyone how to boil water. If I see unboiled water, I'll just point it out. If a reader comments on the grammar and spelling of a story, it's probably because such errors were present in the writing and likely even detracted from the reading experience, not because the reader is somehow concerned the author was never taught the basics.
