Truer Words, my friend, Truer Words.

Don't non-disaster related fests allow for the same thing, though?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I've never seen one. Examples?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT - I mean, in general the exchanges I've been in ask for prompts with specifications. Or is it different in this sort of scenario?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
DA. There's been a few for more general charities like ASPCA, one for LGBT charities and Sweet-charity which supported RAINN. Sometimes you'll find people who will do it without a big disaster happening or without communities. I had some on my flist just last year to support rehoming dogs.

Also, there's been more fic commissions with the move to tumblr, so you might find it easier to find them outside of diaster aid communities.

Ehhhhh... sure that sounds bad, but it's really how you frame it? You enjoy being able to commission fic to your specifications and you wish you didn't only have the opportunity in the aftermath of disasters? Unless you're actively rooting for more disasters, I think it's a pretty normal thing you feel but don't admit in public because it isn't good manners.

I've been the victim of 4 natural disasters and counting (great luck, eh?) and I can't even be offended because having dealt with national emergency management agencies, I know am more likely to get fic than help from the people whose job it is to deal with doling out the help. At least I know what I'm getting from fic like that. With FEMA I got a hand wave and a demand that I go away and go home...to our house that didn't exist anymore.

daaamn.

I'm really curious to know which disasters, or at least what kind of disasters they were.

Glad you're still alive and kickin', anon, and I hope you don't have to deal with any more messes like that.

Fandom: more competent at disaster response than the federal government.

...if only this weren't so accurate

Does your fandom ever do charity drives? One of my old ones just happened to have a favorite charity and would do the auction thing once in a while. Quite convenient, no immediate disaster necessary.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
which is why it would be nice if commissions for fanfics were more of an accepted Thing in fandom

I don't think it would cut into charity profit either, because people could develop more of a taste/demand for it

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
The money I give for these sort of fic drives is always on top of my other charitable spending, so I think you're right.
cloud_riven: Bill from Pokemon side-eying to the left! Judging you! (*animu sweatdrop*)

It's okay. You made me feel bad for finding this funny. Not for long ofc, and I do find it hard to argue against money going to worthwhile groups whatever the altruistic or not reason might be.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
At least you're donating, OP; you're just getting something in return. Like a Comic Relief when you get a night of entertainment, or when you buy a charity single, or even just feel good about yourself. There's a whole Friends episode on that, too.

Don't beat yourself up, so long as you're not actually HOPING for natural disasters for that very reason.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-31 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yes you are. Please remove yourself from the planet as violently as possible.
