I'd pick Bob Hope over Bing Crosby any day. Nothing against Bing, but I like a guy who can make me laugh.

I was just re-watching Road to Rio last week. I think this is from that movie, right? Although they are all kind of the same.

I forgot how slow these movies were. Still fun, but not as enjoyable as I remember from my childhood. It's a bit sad.

Anyway, to reply to what the OP said: I think that was the part of the comedy setup of the movies. Bob was more attractive to women (watching the movie) because he was obviously funnier, but Bing always got the girl (in the screenplay) because he was the straight man.

*flails* ROAD TO SECRET!!!! This makes me happy. I love these movies.

Bing & Bob were both funny, but Bob was the funnier of the two. And he was always the nicer character. Bing's characters were kinda. . . sleazy, sometimes. lol So yeah, I get where you're coming from.

Agreed on all counts. I can't believe there's a secret about these movies, and Bing's characters always seemed so smug and irritating.

Having just re-watched one of these movies recently, they were both sleazy.

The opening of Road to Rio is about both of them escaping from girls they'd dallied with and promised to marry. I'd forgotten how dodgy the characters were. It was treated as such larks and I didn't really understand it when I was younger.

They are both sleazy but in different ways and Bing's characters just annoy me more with their smarminess.

DA

I think it's because Bob's straightforward about his motives, but Bing's the gentleman with a heart of sleaze.

You're not the only one. I preferred Bob's characters in almost every way to the smarmy, smooth talking ones played by Bing.

I like funny guys.

Okay, quick show of hands: how many people initially read this to say they were hoping for Bob to get the girl? And how many read it to say they were hoping for Bob to get Bing?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
I feel the same about the movies Bing did with Fred Astaire.

Me too!

Bob got the girl in Road to Utopia if I recall correctly.
