I'm a female gamer and I play on easy or normal if it's a game I've never played. If I love it, and if I like the idea of being challenged more, I'll go back and play it on a harder level. Who cares? If I don't think it's worth the bother, I won't. If I'm not having fun, why do it?

I don't think you're "betraying" anything - play what you want, how you want; you don't have to justify it to anyone. :)

This is what I've done with the games I've ever gotten into. First time is on easy, then if I want to play it again, I bump up the difficulty.

I have a couple of games I've played multiple times that way. Usually because the first run through(s) are just to finish and then later because I want to try to Do All The (Sidequests) Things.

Yeah, I'm kinda like that too! I tend to be fairly completionist in RPGs but other games I'll go through once and then if I go through it again I'll do the side quests.
