He wasn't. That's why he was breaking down. Though slowly. His face was slowly peeling away taking on a Freddy Krueger vibe because Lucifer was burning right through him.

But I thought Castiel said that only certain bloodlines could contain angels and that each bloodline was tied to an angel. Hence why he needed Claire as a vessel.

But that's what I am saying. Nick wasn't a true vessel. He was a temp one. And you could see the wear and tear on his hide as he went along.

He started off looking like this;



And by the time Hammer of Gods came around, he looked like this;



If Lucifer had stayed within Nick, we would have seen Nick reduced to ash.

Nick was being burned. Sure, it was a slow burn. But it was a burn none the less.
