Re: fandom stuff you're super defensive about

Seriously. It's one thing to disagree with how something is written - another to insult the writers, period.

I mean, I think JRR Tolkein's LOTR series is pretty damn boring. I wouldn't call him a hack, though; it's my personal taste versus his and his many generations of readers.

People call Tolkien a hack? Do they even know what the word is supposed to mean? He wrote everything just as a way of expanding on the language and mythology he created for his own amusement.

I always took "hack" to mean someone who doesn't work/takes shortcuts and such...so...

Anyone who calls Tolkien a hack is an idiot.

I thought it was about caring more about money than the art. I guess it doesn't really matter since I tend to ignore it whenever people say it anyway.

AYRT - Ack! No, I was just using that as an example. I could say he was a horrible writer because I don't like how he writes. But that would be stupid, because it's my taste, not his writing.

However, it also occurs to me now that the OP may have meant hack literally (as in, people specifically call those writers hacks), whereas I thought he/she was speaking about criticism in general.

You may be right about what the OP meant. I just got a bit stuck on your example.

I have no problem with people disliking Tolkien. If someone was bored reading it then that's just how they responded to his writing. Nothing wrong with that. But I find some of the specific complaints people make kind of baffling. I always seem way more defensive about him than I am because my confusion looks like obnoxious stanning.
