Can we talk about old movies? I want to talk about old movies

(Anonymous) 2014-12-30 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Like no one around me understands my love for movies like White Christmas and the Court Jester. I love the movies with Bing and Fred playing each others foils. I love African Queen. I love Singing in the Rain. I love the big silly over blown musicals with lots of random ballroom dancing. I love the unnecessary custom changes. I love it all!

I also love these things! The pacing and sensibilities are all so different, and it's nice to get a break from the ADD generation of filmmaking where something needs to be exploding every three minutes or people get bored.

I love how they aren't afraid of being lavish. I think this is why I enjoyed the new Annie so much. Why is there singing? Because it's goddamn fun!

12 Angry Men! We studied that for English class when I was in school, and I still really enjoyed it. Same with To Kill A Mockingbird.

I think the test of whether something is good is if you can study it in English class and not be thoroughly sick of it at the end.

All my favorite actresses are from old movies. Barbara Stanwyck, Ingrid Bergman, Bette Davis, Audrey Hepburn, Katharine Hepburn. I don't even need to hear what the movie is about. If I hear one of the names I love, I'm there. There's no one like that in modern movies for me.

What were your thoughts on the Sabrina remake?

I haven't seen it and I actually forgot there was one. What's the general consensus on it? Is it as hated as most remakes?

I liked it. It updated some things that wouldn't fly with modern audiences, tweaked a few little things to make it all work in modern era, but it's mostly 1:1 remake. Julia Ormond was stunning in it. It's a shame she didn't do more movies.

Cool. I'll have to check it out. I actually love watching remakes and adaptations and deciding which changes I think worked and which ones I hate.

I LOVE THE COURT JESTER. It's one of my favorite movies! Top 10 for sure, maybe top 5.

I have watched A LOT of old movies. Some faves? Way way back, I have a great love for Metropolis. I like the Kino restored original version, and yes, I like the tinted Moroder version from the 1980s.

Love the Merle Oberon/Laurence Olivier version of Wuthering Heights. It's still the preeminent version for me.

Love How Green was My Valley - yeah, yeah, Citizen Kane, I know, go ahead and sue me, but I love the nostalgic feel of How Green was My Valley and I adore the singing in it.

Gone with the Wind is epic, and Scarlett O'Hara is a fabulous, fabulous character. A travesty that she made a fraction of what Clark Gable did, but a sign of the times.

It Happened One Night is a silly little film, but it really showcased Clark Gable's charisma.

Wings, which won the first Academy Award for best picture is dated and over the top, and yet, during a pivotal scene in the movie, I embarrassed myself by still crying over the ridiculously over-wrought death of tragic circumstances.

I got more, but I should probably stop here.

if you like Wuthering Heights and Gone with the Wind check out That Hamilton Woman (also known as the Lady Hamilton). Laurence Olivier is great in it, very charismatic and sexy, and Vivien Leigh is amazing in it.

Yes, Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh were on fire in that movie! Such a beautiful couple. Too bad it didn't work out in the long term, but I still sigh when I see them together.

I have become such a TCM addict recently! I love anything with Myrna Loy or Barbara Stanwyck.

Old movies are the best! I was just the other day thinking I need to re watch Rebecca. That movie is so good. Those are the kinds of things I tend to like - the dramas, the Gothic things, the noirs, the gangster movies, the Hitchcocks. Anything with Bogart in it. Love them.

I mean don't get me wrong I love the comedies too but I've been in a very black and white thriller mood recently I guess.

Seconding the love for Humphrey Bogart!

Casablanca and the Maltese Falcon are two of my favorite movies ever.
