Huh, I disagree. While I do agree that Merlin/Gwen are totally cute together, I think it was pretty obvious that they were going to have Gwen/Arthur eventually, with or without canon anyway. There's the whole "she's a servant, he's royal" trope going, there were hints here and there (Lancelot's episode where Merlin asks her who she'd pick if she had to choose for example). Plus, sure, the kids watching might not have known about the Arthurian legend but the parents probably would have heard of it and been familiar that "hey, Gwen's supposed to be with Arthur" that they might have talked about it with their kids. Especially when Lancelot showed up.
