Have you ever read the Narnia books too? Because I reread them after I finally got around to reading The Hobbit and found Narnia talked down to it's audience a lot more than The Hobbit did.

What I did find irritating was the reality of how much was not in The Hobbit that got elaborated on only in LotR. Like the whole damn book the Elvenking is only referred to as that! No name at all! But then I read LotR some time around the age of 12 or so the first time, while I only read The Hobbit due to the LotR movies.

Tolkien wrote The Hobbit long before LOTR. He was also writing his massive elf epics that would later be published as The Silmarillion - but at the time he didn't think the two were all that directly connected, and just meant The Hobbit to be an adventure story for his kids. Only when his publishers asked for a sequel to TH, which turned into LOTR, did he really make all the connections between them. There's all sorts of stuff like that: he didn't know if Elrond was an elf or not, he didn't know Thranduil's name, he didn't decide until later that the Necromancer was actually Sauron, etc. And of course the Riddles in the Dark chapter goes a little bit differently.

Yeah, I am aware of all that. What I mean is that even for a book intended for children and not directly linked to the rest of his world (despite a few hints like the mention of Gondolin), it was a bit irritating and seemed like slack writing on his part to not even give the Elvenking a name, when he had more part in the story than, say, someone like Bard.
