I find some games (mostly rpg types) to be more engaging than book series, and in a way it's almost like an anime too. It's like three genres wrapped into one for me, and that's the appeal for me. And I like it because like some others have said, I can't always get into a book or anime but I can get into a game. I guess with some games you could always opt out of the common route if you hated it and go bad route, etc. So it's customizable. Unlike where some mediums there is not that kind of option, save for fandom works if you don't like the ending or end OTP.

Also unless you're one of those gamers that has to have the new stuff right away it can be cheap. I know I used to wait for used, and Game Stop sales on the used stuff (BOGO, etc). I thinking specs on laptops has gotten better where you can spend $500 and get a decent laptop to play stuff on. Only hardcore gamers are blowing $1000+ for specialized gaming laptops anymore.

Any hobby can get expensive, and there are a lot more expensive than gaming. I was blowing $100 a month at one point on books. My friend got into photography and was blowing thousands a month on equipment and a dark room.
