Agreed.
I hate how game developers never give in-game rewards anymore. Everything is DLC now. :/
There used to be extra stuff unlocked for taking on the challenge of harder modes. Like alternate costumes, infinite ammo, cheat codes, secret levels,etc...
Not anymore. Once consoles started getting online they started monetizing everything.

If I like a game enough I will try to get all the trophies. But some of them are damn near impossible or require hours of grinding. Those aren't worth it.
And hell yeah, I do cheat if I get frustrated enough!

I was thinking of two games this whole idea applied to.

Dragon Age has a number of achievement badges I will never get around to claiming because there are some plot directions I simply don't want to take - ones like the Ultimate Sacrifice or letting Alistair take it.

Recent discussions about just what the "gift" mentioned at the end of the DA DLC "Witch Hunt" actually is, is only slightly better since it appears Bioware gave a possible explanation in Inquisition.

The other example though is from The Sims 4 - complete the stages of an Aspiration, and you get points that can be used to buy various buffs for your sim, or items like health or mood potions. These are all base-game items as well, so they aren't dependent on paying out for DLC.

Those Sims potions can be damn useful when you want to send a sim to work in the right mood, which can be very handy in the higher levels of a career where it's harder to get promoted.

That's both sides of the situation with achievement badges.

Some achievements however you can go into just for the challenge, not because you want the badge for it. If you want to fight an insanely difficult optional mega-boss for the hell of it, then you're doing it for the fun of doing so. I fondly remember how hard the fights against Ruby and Emerald WEAPONs were in Final Fantasy VII. Damn hard fights, but fun to play through if you have all the right materia!
