I always choose Normal mode my first time through and leave it at that. I won't raise difficulty unless there is a reward/trophy to be gained from playing on Hard. I don't really enjoy the challenge of Hard mode. Though in some cases I've found that Hard is not that bad after you're already familiar with the game mechanics and level layouts.

But I totally get you. I just want to get through the damn game once and see the whole story. I'd like to enjoy the experience, not tear my hair out and break my controller.

Tbh, these psuedo "badasses" who shame others for playing on Easy are some of the most pathetic individuals I've seen. They've got pretty fragile egos if they need to put others down (over fucking video games) to feel better about themselves.
And I'm willing to bet they also suffer a lot of stress playing that way too, enough to nearly ruin the intended fun.
