Could be read as romance. Could be read as someone defending a friend against cruel insult. Either way, there's definitely real affection there and reading that as love interest wouldn't be entirely off-base.

Having not read the books, I agree that this passage could go either way. He could be protective of a friend (and someone he clearly admires), or he could be protective of someone who he's harboring romantic feelings for.

(However, I still ship them from the bits I've seen of the show, and what I've heard of the book.)

The only characters I ship in GoT. ♥‿♥ Lady Knight x One Handed Hobo OTP 4ever.

I'm not sure if that's textual support for romance, but I totally see why you might. My reading is that Brienne kind of short-circuits Jaime's brain. She's a woman... but she can fight as well as he can. She hates him... but she helped him. She's his enemy... but he likes and respects her. She's not a knight... but she's more of a knight than he is.

Jaime Lannister (as we initially meet him) has the face of a god, the right hand of a samurai, and the brain of a reality TV celebutante. It can do bitchy remarks and that's about all.

He feels SOMETHING for Brienne, but he doesn't know what, and he doesn't know how to find out what. His crummy mental OS may have come with some self-diagnostic programs, but he doesn't know where they are or how to run them, because he's never used them in his life.

Yes, I think you hit the nail on the head. Sansa isn't the only character to buy into the whole perfect knight ideal. That's the role Jaime was supposed to play... only of course we know it didn't turn out that way. Then he meets Brienne, who doesn't look the picture of the perfect knight (not the way Jaime does, or Loras does, for example) but she embodies it with her behavior and her deeds. It really throws him for a loop, far more so because she's a woman.

I can see why, in the GoT universe, respect for a woman looks a lot like love. It often works that way IRL, too. But I'm not necessarily convinced that's what's going on between Jaime and Brienne.

But I think it won't only look that way to 3rd parties, but maybe themselves, too. So when series-cersei confronted Brienne about it and Brienne didn't flat out deny that she loved Jaime, I think that doesn't necessarily mean they're omgmeanttobeloveatfirstsight!! It's just that whatever their relationship, there is something to it that *feels* like romance, that she can't deny, and he couldn't, either.

Everything excerpt of this book I've read was awful but that wasn't terrible.

Yeah, I find the ship pretty forced in the book, because IMO GRRM is terrible at writing developing romances (I haven't seen enough of them in the show to know if the chemistry there is better) but I can't deny that it exists. The only scene it really worked for me though is the bath scene.

I think it can be read as romantic or platonic and you wouldn't be wrong in either case, he certainly cares a lot for her regardless.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-31 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
If you truly believe that the only time a man would ever bother to defend a woman is because he loves her, then yes, that is correct. If you are open to the idea that there are some men who'd defend Brienne because she's a good person who doesn't deserve being denigrated for her appearance, then no, that's not necessarily evidence of Jaime's romantic feelings.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-31 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
But it IS open to interpretation.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-31 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's what I said. I do think it's a little sad that people see a character acting with decency as some sort of hugely significant romantic rather than, well, the decent thing to do. It says volumes about what low expectations people have, not just of Jaime but in general when it comes to human behavior. But yes, totally open to interpretation.

I think the case can be made that in the ASoIaF universe specifically, defending a woman in that way could indicate romantic feelings. Seeing that doesn't mean that someone thinks the only time a man would ever bother to defend a woman is because he loves her, it just means they think it fits in with the gender politics of the world.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-31 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
But it would also fit with the gender (and class) politics of the 'verse (at least the Westeros part of it) that defending a noble lady is exactly what a knight should be doing. On the other hand, Jaime was pretty cynical about the meaning and the duties of knighthood until he (a) became the captain of the Kingsguard and (b) met Brienne.

Jaime certainly feels something for Brienne, but Brienne definitely loves Jaime. Dude inhabited her dreams and supplanted the previous loves of her life.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-31 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, Brienne's got it bad!

(Anonymous) 2014-12-31 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
No Jaime definitely has the thirst. They're super into each other.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-31 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
One of my favorite lines in the TV series is the 'I love him like a brother' response she gives to Cersei. I love GoT/ASoIaF, but there needs to be a little more humor like that to lighten it up sometimes.

As much as I think that GRRM *is* writing Jaime/Brienne as romance (and I am totally good and awesome with that interpretation) I always think it's intriguing when people point to examples of a man expressing any kind of regard or protectiveness toward a romance and says, "See! Love! This proves it!"
