Marco Polo (the Netflix Show) POSSIBLE SPOILERS IN THREAD

(Anonymous) 2014-12-31 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Has anyone else been watching Marco Polo? I'm only a few episodes in, but I like it so far. I think it has its issues and it's not exactly groundbreaking, but I think it's a fun show and I was actually kind of surprised by how severely its been raked over the coals by critics. It's not that bad. Also, Khutulun and Byamba are super hot together. Does anyone else have any thoughts about it?

I watched the first couple eps and I didn't think it was bad but definitely a little boring. I really liked the Mongol stuff and the Khan was awesome, and it was really pretty, and there were a few other things that were cool, but for the most part, I just didn't care. Also Marco was really boring and so was his dad and I didn't care if anyone succeeded or failed. also it was like it was a series that understood the formulaic structure of a prestige series but didn't understand why that was the structure so you got things like that massive slow motion montage at the end of the first episode that was completely pointless and silly.

Idk. I'm not crazy about it.

I dig it and I'm a little sad that the fandom is so small...and that there's no Jingim/Marco or Bayan/Marco fic :(

But yeah, like you said, it's not perfect (among other things, there's way too much unnecessary female nudity...which wouldn't be so bad if they had some nude dudes. Come on). It also got off to kind of a slow start. The harsh response from critics kind of surprised me too though, considering how much they creamed themselves over other Netflix shows like OITNB and House of Cards which both kind of bored me and/or made me hate the main characters

The Internet is in a constant cycle of over hype and backlash and rediscovery. This is the ecosystem you need to get used to. Marco Polo probably got panned so much in large part because Internet critics loved the other original shows so much.

Marco Polo is one of those weird shows that most critics seem to hate, but the general audience seems to like it (with exceptions, of course). It has like a 27% on Rotten Tomatoes for critics and...93% for everyone else. Pretty big difference.

The thing that bugs me though is that people keep trying to call it a poor man's Game of Thrones. Aside from rampant female nudity that serves no purpose, it's not really all that similar to like Game of Thrones. There's no point in comparing them.

The GoT thing annoyed me too. Marco Polo is probably more comparable to...idk, Vikings or some other historically based drama.
