But I don't want to ruin my memories of Westley by seeing Elwes acting like such an asshole. I finally read the first nine chapters of the book yesterday because I got tired of going on excerpts and the analyses of other people and Christian Grey is awful. Not even in a "ooh he's so manly and dominant way" that I could understand some people appreciating for the sake of the fantasy, just petty and infuriating.

Basically Westley was the sort of character I thought Christian Grey was going to be, because he could be kinda terrible at times too, but that's not how it turned out.

I feel like I should finish the book for the sake of being better informed, but I don't think I can take any more.

Pervocracy's been doing a sporking. It's sufficiently awful that I can't even read the sporking, but it's probably better than reading the book: http://pervocracy.blogspot.com/

I actually read those a while ago and forgot a lot of what Cliff said and still managed to be surprised by the awfulness. Even with his complaints, I somehow forgot how weirdly negative the book is toward kink, especially for a book that supposedly made kink mainstream.

Oh the series is sooooo negative toward kink, which is one of the things that pisses me off about so many defenses of it. Hello, guys, BDSM isn't portrayed as positive AT ALL in it! The whole idea is that he's into because he's DAMAGED and needs to be cured of his taste for it, and the series ends with him no longer being into it! And these people are like, "you're criticizing the books because you want to shame women for their BDSM fantasies" and I'm like, "NO, THE BOOKS THEMSELVES ARE SHAMING THEM FOR IT. WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU."

That and Ana doesn't even like it. There are a couple brief sentences here and there about how it was so amazing but most of the time she's just miserable. She's not squirming in anticipation when she's looking at the floggers and things, her mind is screaming at her to run away. And then her reaction afterwards tends to be "well I survived, I guess that wasn't so bad" and not wanting to it again and try a bunch of other things too. It's something she has to deal with in order to be with him, not something she actually wants. And the book doesn't even make it seem like it's just her. I did not see a single sentence that implied a sub can get anything out of BDSM other than pleasing the dom.

lol I skimread that first couple sentences and thought you meant Elwes acts like an asshole and that you were talking about that book he wrote about his time doing Princess Bride and I was like OH NO D:

...carry on, this comment is useless.

It's not useless. It made me aware of a book by Elwes about Princess Bride. :D

Haha, well, yay! I haven't read it yet, I have no idea how it is, but it sounds like fun. Hopefully it's good!

I've read it and it is good. Really sweet and full of anecdotes about the cast and the making of the movie. :)

I just ordered the book, because - how on earth could I NOT know that Cary Elwes wrote a book about the filming of this movie?
Thank you anon, for this comment, I can't wait to read it!

I kind of feel any actor with a sense of humor about himself would be terrible as Christian Grey, since the sporked parts I could get through were so dreadful. (I felt that about Matt Bomer, too.) idk anything about this Jamie Dornan guy.)
